Finding a way back to yourself when stress becomes too much
Stress is part of being human. Work, relationships, financial pressures, uncertainty, major life changes, and everyday responsibilities can all place demands on us. Sometimes, however, stress begins to feel like more than a response to a particular situation. You may find yourself constantly tense, overwhelmed, restless, exhausted, unable to fully relax, or feeling as though your mind and body are always “on.”
You may know exactly what is causing your stress and still find that knowing isn’t enough to make it go away. This is where working with the body can become an important part of stress management and relief.
The Value of a Nervous System Reset
My approach to treating chronic stress and exhaustion is to focus on helping the nervous system move out of a constant state of overactivation. Think of it as a reset.
The goal isn’t simply to force yourself to become more productive or to squeeze more out of an already exhausted system. In fact, sometimes trying harder is exactly what keeps the cycle going.
Instead, the work involves approaching the problem from two directions. First, we work to calm the nervous system, to lower the volume, reduce unnecessary tension, and help the body move out of a constant state of alert. Second, we work to support the return of your natural energy and resilience.
The goal is to restore balance, to create an “energy household” that takes in enough to support what it gives out. And ideally, perhaps even a little extra. Because who couldn’t use a little extra energy?
Don’t Accept Constant Stress and Exhaustion as Normal
If you regularly find yourself running out of energy, crashing at the same time every day, or feeling as though ordinary responsibilities have become overwhelming, it’s worth paying attention.
If ongoing stress has left you feeling constantly depleted, there are ways to help your system find a better balance. I’ve seen how powerful it can be when people begin addressing not just the demands in their lives, but also the way their bodies and nervous systems have been responding to those demands. You don’t have to simply accept exhaustion as the price of having a busy life. There may be another way.
Craniosacral Therapy offers a gentle, hands-on approach that creates a safe space for deep relaxation, greater mind-body connection and awareness, and a sense of coming back to center. Rather than asking you to simply think your way out of stress, Craniosacral Therapy invites you to slow down and experience what happens when your body has an opportunity to settle. In my approach, Craniosacral Therapy works with the nervous system to support a shift from an actively stressed, sympathetic state toward a calmer, parasympathetic state.
Craniosacral Therapy for Stress
Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive form of bodywork that uses light touch and a quiet, attentive approach.
A session provides an opportunity to step away from the demands of everyday life and bring your attention back into your body. Rather than trying to force relaxation, the intention is to create conditions in which relaxation can happen naturally.
From a nervous system perspective, the parasympathetic state is where the body functions best. It’s our natural “rest, restore, and repair” mode, where digestion, healing, and clear thinking can all happen efficiently. By contrast, the sympathetic nervous system is designed for survival. It sends our attention and energy outward, preparing us to fight, flee, or freeze.
Many people find that during or after a Craniosacral Therapy session they become deeply relaxed and more aware of sensations, breathing, tension, and subtle changes in their body. For someone who has been living with ongoing stress, simply having dedicated time in which nothing is required of them can be quite meaningful. There is no need to solve the problem during the session. There is no need to figure everything out. For a while, you can simply pause.
Let’s work together so that sense of pause can become your new baseline, your new normal. Over a series of sessions, I have experienced that many people find that they become better able to recognize when stress is building and more familiar with what it feels like to return to a calmer state.
When is Craniosacral Therapy helpful?
People seek Craniosacral Therapy for many different reasons. You may be interested in exploring it if you are experiencing:
Ongoing or chronic stress
Feeling overwhelmed or “always on”
Difficulty relaxing or switching off
Stress-related muscle tension
A demanding or high-pressure work environment
Difficulty settling after conflict or emotionally difficult experiences
A sense of being disconnected from your body
Difficulty making space for rest and recovery
A desire for a more holistic approach to stress management
A desire to develop greater self-awareness and resilience
Craniosacral Therapy is not a substitute for medical or mental health care when that care is needed. If stress is significantly affecting your daily life, sleep, relationships, or ability to function, it may be appropriate to work with a qualified mental health professional as well. Craniosacral Therapy is often used as a complementary approach alongside other forms of support.
Stress isn’t only what is happening around you
One of the most important things I have noticed in my work is that we often combine the stress itself with the things we believe are causing it. A difficult relationship, too many responsibilities, uncertainty about the future, or a demanding job can all become identified as the stress.
Of course, these things matter. External circumstances can absolutely trigger a stress response. But there is another part of the picture: what is happening within us in response to those circumstances.
We cannot always immediately change a difficult relationship, resolve a financial problem, leave a stressful job, or know what the future will bring. But we can begin to develop a different relationship with the stress response itself. When we are completely caught up inside a problem, it can be difficult to think clearly, communicate effectively, or know what to do next.
When we can find even a little more space within ourselves, the same situation may feel different. The problem may still be there. But it is no longer consuming our entire inner world. This movement, from being completely absorbed by stress toward having greater space around it, is an important part of healthy stress management.
What happens when stress becomes chronic?
Our nervous system is constantly responding to what we perceive in our environment and within ourselves. A certain degree of activation is useful and necessary. It helps us respond when something requires our attention.
The difficulty comes when the body has very little opportunity to settle. Long periods of stress can be accompanied by muscle tension, difficulty relaxing, disrupted sleep, racing thoughts, irritability, emotional exhaustion, difficulty concentrating, and a general sense of being overwhelmed.
Not only this, but the body can take on symptoms of stress. I often hear people say to me:
“My shoulders are always tight.”
“I carry tension in my neck.”
“I feel tight in my chest.”
“My jaw is always clenched.”
“I can’t take a deep breath.”
“I can’t sleep at night, and when I do wake up, I feel immediately tense.”
“I’m exhausted, but I can’t sleep.”
“I feel completely depleted.”
“I feel like my nervous system is on overdrive.”
“I’m constantly bracing myself.”
or simply:
“I can’t switch off.”
“Everything feels like too much.”
Even when there is nothing immediately wrong, the mind and body may have difficulty finding a sense of ease. Stress management is therefore not only about eliminating stressful circumstances. It is also about learning how to recognize the body’s signals, developing greater awareness of our responses, and creating opportunities for genuine relief, rest and recovery. This is one of the places where Craniosacral Therapy can offer valuable support for stress relief and relaxation.
